There was a time in 1961 when I would get "off the air" on Channel 7 at 5:30. Prairie Farms sponsored "Brave Eagle", a syndicated show there. At 6:00pm on Channel 10, Prairie Farms sponsored "Jeff's Collie, re-runs of "Lassie". So to do the commercials I would run through the alley between Maine and Hampshire St. in Quincy and get there in time for the opening commercial. It was all "live"...adlib and no video tape. If you goofed (and I sure did) it was aired!
WGEM-TV 1961-1970. Acting up! We tried many things! Maris Brenner appeared as a guest once a week making portraits using the letters of the alphabet. She was cute and a big hit. We tried using "Chester, The Jester" in a puppet theatre...this was not too successful. We also filled time with a dance using white gloves on our hands, wearing a black tuxedo jacket "backwards and letting the fingers dance on a black velvet covered riser while we played Herb Alpert tunes. This was a hit but could not be used often as it soon wore out. TV was new...we tried many things!
Joe McNeilly, Photographer. Joe and I became friends and swapped our interests with each other. He was Chief Photographer for Channel 10, WGEM-TV and did a lot of photos for the Quincy Herald Whig. He was interested in rock hounding so we swapped ideas and some equipment. I hear from Joe often and value nhis friendship.
Low budget show!. On Channel 10 we had cartoons but no children visiting. My new boss was a friend of Joe Bonansinga, Manager at Channel 10.
Jimmy Waters, Cameraman - WGEM-TV. What a nice guy! Jimmy Waters would go along with my shennanigans and help me. Last I heard he was in Terre Haute, IN. It was fun doing this type show. Didn't pay much but the letters from children sure fed the ego!
Possum Holler Opry . Dale Hayes of Hannibal provided this photo of his uncle Kenny Hayes, who played in the Possum Holler Band on Sundays for a period of years. Maybe you can help me idnetify some of these folks. Toby Dick Ellis is wearing a wig and bib overalls. His sidekick (?) has the big cowboy hat on the right. Do you remember the others?
All American Quartet. After WWII, C. R. Melton organized the All American Quartet. They appeared on WGEM-TV, Channel 10 during the mid 60's. The Melton family consisted of C.R., Alice, Clarence, and Donnie. Kenny Hayes is seen here on the lead guitar and Paul Hoots on the bass guitar. Thanks to Dale and Adam Hayes for the memories!
Promo Slide Channel 10. Slides like this were thrown away after the event was over. I found this in a box and have no idea why I kept it. These were used as video over station breaks.
Ted Warren, Channel 10's Artist. Ted wore many hats...here is one I like best...his artistry.
Ted Warren, Cowboy, Cameraman, Artist etc. Ted filled many rolls at Channel 10, WGEM-TV. Photo from his daughter, Wendy.
