Car Chase?
Stories of The Lord's Working In My Life
East St. Louis
One night in 1967 I was driving a new Ford station wagon on Highway 3 in East St.
Louis, Illinois near the stockyards. Something warned me that the car behind me was
following a little too closely. I was traveling the speed limit and returning to our home in
Quincy, at least 90 miles to the north. Glancing in the rear view mirror, I could see three
heads in the car behind me as another car had pulled up behind them and the headlights of
the third car outlined them.
The third car car turned off. The car behind me passed me and sped up the road
at a high rate of speed. Suddenly it stopped and the doors opened. Three men jumped out
and started waving their arms for me to stop. It was almost as if the Lord sent an angel to
warn me that this was a trap. I knew there was nothing wrong with my car or my driving.
Instead of stopping, I hit the gas pedal and swung into the left lane ... touching onto the left
shoulder. As I passed them I was doing about eighty-five mph and the nearest man jumped
back to keep from being hit. I held that speed for at least fifteen minutes until I was sure
that they were not trying to follow me. In my heart I was sensed that they had mischief in
their mind seeing a lone guy in a new car on a little traveled road.

20: O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee.”
