In the summer of '63 Fred and Joanna Anesi came to our house and we sat around a kitchen table talking about our mutual hobby...collectng minerals and polishing rocks into jewelry. We decided to start a club devoted to this hobby as Mt. Sterling had an active rock and mineral study group. We rented a room at the Lincoln-Douglas Hotel and placed a notice in the Quincy Herald Whig. One Sunday afternoon we had about 30 people show up from all walks of life and we had samples of our rocks and mineral collection...plus some pieces of jewelry we had fashioned from local rocks. This was the start of the Gem City Rock Club and it is still meeting monthly in the Good Samaritan Home on Quincy. Following are some of the slides I used in making "rock talks" to schools, clubs and organizations in those days. In retrospect, I thought I knew a lot more than I really did. But they listened and you know the old adage, if you can's dazzle them with your brilliance - baffle them with your BULL! I did!
Fairy Crystals. Sorry, I forget the scientific name for these natural crystals. Maybe someone could help me out here?
Fluorspar Crystals. This mineral is used as a flux in smelting aluminum...it is used in toothpaste to retard cavities and it has a host of other industrial applications. It comes in many colors.
Mounting a Cab . Here I demonstrated the mounting of a stone in a silver pendant by stroking the bezeel with a curved tool that grabbed the stone.
Tiger Eye Cabs. These are oriented in two different directions. These could be mounted in a ring or a pendant. We used to see polished tiger eye in men's rings with a knight's head engraved in the flat surface.
Fossils. In those days I could rattle off the names of these fossils...but at my age these names escape me. Here's where I could also use some help! :-) PS: The Lord created many wonderous things on earth. Psalm 19 reads: "The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament showeth His handiwork"
