Lookin’ Back - Lookin’ Forward

Beneath the waters at Ie Shima, crusted with coral and sand
There lies a hulk of an old navy ship half buried in the strand.
Her memories are now all but forgotten...her flag was tattered and torn
What’s left of her crew is scattered .. their photos are faded and worn.

Not much left of the ship itself. Salt water took care of that.
Fish swim round through the galley. Nothing to make them fat.
Ths sun dances low ‘cross the surface where the water sparkles still
Sending reflections of tiny starburst ‘till the sun slides over the hill.

Years have passed since she went there. Time has a tale of it’s own
But thoughts turn back to the night in the black when we lost our floating home.
The sound of a plane in the darkness, maybe a shot was fired.
Then an awful explosion ... and silence - ‘till a voice inquired,

“What about the men in the engine room ... who’s hurt and who’s alive?”
Came the Captain’s cry from up on Con. His voice was uncontrived.
“All dead down there!” was the reply. Then voices raised in moan
As others cried out in wounded shout as they gaped at a hole so blown.

So memories know that they can go where footsteps cannot trod.
Where those men went, where they were sent is known only to God.
Their lives were short is one retort that often we heard it said.
They went ahead with the other dead. Life’s book may now be read.

Follow them we will when our heartbeats still but we don’t have to complain
God’s Son became that LAMB that was slain to atone for our sin and pain.
He offers us life forever ... and we can accept or disdain.
We have just had more time than our shipmates. May I explain?

We’ve had more time to study and think. But life is really just a blink.
He has a great plan for eternity and promises us His security.
He’s left it up to us where we will go ...but in His Bible He does show
That His love is great .. His grace is grand. His Word is true!
Hell cannot withstand. So it is up to you ... not what you do!
For it can’t be earned, this gift so true.

Yes, the waters flow o’er the sand below
On a far off bay out Ie Shima way.
But there will be a day when we all will say,
“You are Lord”
We hope that’s what you pray, anyway!

Your Life’s Work

Tonight lays heavy on my heart
When I replay the Quincy part
Where I often sat on private throne
Of my own making...mine alone.

Appetites and ego filled my days
Bought with coins of smile and praise.
Watching what sold in the marketplace
A patterened life to keep their pace.

The clock ticked on; the days rolled by
Months became years; now my cry.
“Where has it gone?” Applause and cheer.
Why did I sell out? What did I fear?

Now I see where I went wrong.
No need to point it out so long.
But past is past. It cannot change.
Time is NOW. Does that sound strange?

Tomorrow’s promise as yet unkept.
Yesterday’s record is sealed. I wept.
Today is all I have in the bank of time
It goes so fast. I’m past my prime

So I seal the record my life has writ?
Do I broadcast and embellish a bit?
Should I bend to every push and shove
What some call mean, others call love!

Take your text books...your seminars
Wave them around ... wear them as bars
Okay for you if you’re proud of those.
Earn big bucks with the life you chose.

But the day will come - it’s filed away.
Nursing home bed - nursing home day.
You’ll look back and wonder the worth
Of the time you spent while here on earth.

Oh Happy Day

The sore upon my jaw was small - Not much as I recall.

But when the doctor saw it - Biopsy was the call.

Well it came back from the lab - A basal carcinoma bad!

In a Texas town - Dr. Day took a look, His smile became a frown.

“This type can spread”, the Doctor said ,”Better find a seat and settle down.”

Led to a back room - they sat me in a chair.

A pretty nurse named Tracey – doled out professional care

She stuck a needle in my jaw on the count of three

I pretended not to notice, impress her, doncha’ see!

From then on I didn’t care how Calvin Day would carve and pare.

So I looked at pictures on the wall and watched young nurses down the hall.

A horse on skates on a special door where Nurse Priscilla did her chore

Staple, solder, weld and sew…the Doctor finally let me go.

His parting words as I recall; “sunscreen, hat and have a ball”

It’s worth it all if you should ask ..Dr. Day’s the man to do the task

With gratitude I’d like to share…It was paid by Medicare!

For Pastor KB

Our life is like the sanctuary
When it’s dark and sounds are few.
Where the nightlight burns a shadow
‘Cross the rug beneath the pew.

The organ voice is silent.
The piano keys are still
The pulpit is so stately
But no message there to thrill.

All the bones are present
All the tools are there
Waiting for a special time
When His Spirit fills the air.

On Sunday morn a janitor
Unlocks door - flips a switch.
The room explodes in beauty
Fan blades start to twitch.

The congregation gathers,
The Pastor takes his seat.
The Choir Director enters
The scene now has heartbeat.

I dare compare this process
My rug was stained with sin
The mice of vice played there
And dirtied all within

I had a house, it was dark
My pews were all abused
My vocal chords were rusty
My hymnals were confused.

I shouted from a lectern
Things I wanted to hear
But deep in my heart I knew
They were rottenness in my ear.

Then one day sweet heaven
Sent a servant to my door.
The truth he told and did unfold
It lightened wall and floor.

Plainly I saw what was needed
And I took them to His cross.
I gave him my allegience
And the Lord is now my boss.

How much the two are similiar.
The houses here described
There is no life without the light
From the glorious Crucified

Let’s do our part- take it to heart
And let our light so shine
That those who live in darkness
Are saved by the Light Divine.
