Roy had to teach me about horses after I fell off "Prairie Princess" in front of 500 children in Mt. Sterling, IL. Here's how it happened. Prairie Farms arranged to have me ride into a city park in Mt. Sterling where they had set up a stage and were handing out free cartons of Chocolate Milk.
I was not a good horseman but I was young and stupid. When this high spirited filly got to the edge of the park there was a shallow ditch. She didn't want to step down in it so I kicked her in the belly with my spurs. Wow! She shot up like a rocket leaving me sitting in mid air...on nothing!
The youngsters were running toward us...I was red faced...the big hat rolled across the grass and one of the supervisors told the boss, "Your cowboy just fell off the horse". After that incident, they had me training in Horsemanship 101 at Roy Tweedt's barn every Sunday afternoon for a month in November 1954!
Booted up with Chocolate Milk!. On one show I was ad libbing a commercial on a medium close (90mm) lens which just showed head and shoulders. A cute little 4 year old girl on my right began pouring chocolate milk in my boot. (I had my pants leg rolled and stuffed in my sock and my knees were crossed.) No one but me, the cameraman and the flooman knew what was going on...but it's a commercial that I will always remember! ===================###====================
Mel Mac. Sometime in the 1950's the new "unbreakable" dinnerware was introduced. I was told to advertise it on The Cactus Club. Don't recall exactly how it was used but housewives could get a cup and saucer...or dinner plate for so many "pouring spouts" plus a small amount of money. It was a good promotion. I was assured that this new plastic, MelMac, was unbreakable. So without testing it I announced how great it was and threw the cup on the studio floor. Yep! It shattered into a zillion pieces and a little boy sitting next to me said, "You broke it!" That was on black and white Teevee...but my face was beet red!
Cute Little Blonde. Don't have her picture...she had to be about 4 years old in a little white dress, blonde hair and soft olive colored skin. She had a cute face BUT she would not sit still so the camerman could get a close up of her. During the film he told me to capture her and put her on my lap ...because little faces make for good television! I got her to come sit on my lap and as I talked she was nodding her head up and down. It was a good program and she was cute as a button....but the whole time I was talking with her she was wetting her pants and I was wearing light grey gabardine trousers! I finished that program with her on my lap...and I was red faced!
